Can You Drive in the UK or US with a Ghanaian Licence—and Vice Versa?

Travelling from Ghana to the UK or America and planning to drive? Or visiting Ghana with a British or American licence?

Your licence may let you drive, but the rules depend on your destination and whether you are visiting or moving there. Here is what to know before taking the keys.

1. Can You Drive in the UK with a Ghanaian Licence?

Yes, as a visitor to Great Britain, you can drive a car covered by your valid, full Ghanaian licence for up to 12 months from your last entry. Great Britain means England, Scotland and Wales.

You must stay within the vehicle categories on your licence and meet the applicable age and insurance requirements. A learner permit is not the same as a full licence.

Check the official GOV.UK visitor guidance before travelling.

What If You Move to Great Britain?

If you become resident, the usual allowance is 12 months from becoming resident. Do not treat a short trip abroad as restarting that resident allowance.

A Ghanaian licence is not currently eligible for a straightforward exchange for a British car licence. To continue driving after the allowance ends, you normally need a British provisional licence and must pass the theory and practical tests.

Start early so you do not lose your entitlement to drive independently. See the Highway Code licensing guidance and use the official licence-exchange checker for your situation.

What About Northern Ireland?

Northern Ireland has its own licensing authority. Its guidance provides a similar 12-month allowance for ordinary foreign licence holders, with different starting points for visitors and residents. Use the Northern Ireland guidance for the full conditions.

2. Can You Drive in the US with a Ghanaian Licence?

US driving rules depend on the state. Your valid Ghanaian licence may allow you to drive as a visitor, but some states also require an International Driving Permit, or IDP.

Check the official Department of Motor Vehicles website for every state where you will drive. There is no single visitor time limit covering the whole country.

If an IDP is required, arrange it before leaving Ghana. The US does not issue IDPs to foreign visitors. Rental companies may also require one even where the state does not.

Moving to the US? Check your state’s deadline, identification requirements and tests for getting a local licence. Do not assume visitor rules continue after you become resident.

Start with US government guidance for foreign drivers, which links to state motor vehicle agencies.

3. Can You Drive in Ghana with a UK or US Licence?

Before travelling to Ghana, obtain a recognised International Driving Permit from an authorised issuer in the country that issued your licence. Carry it with your valid home licence.

UK travel guidance for Ghana specifies the 1949 IDP. US travel guidance for Ghana also says drivers need an international driving permit or a Ghanaian licence.

The permit supports your original licence; it does not replace it or give you permission to drive vehicle types you are not licensed for. Confirm the permit’s validity and your permitted period of use with Ghana’s DVLA for your circumstances.

Moving to Ghana?

Contact DVLA about converting your foreign licence. Its requirements include a valid foreign licence and an authentication letter or driving records from the relevant authority.

For foreign nationals, DVLA also lists residence and identification documents and an introduction letter from a sponsor or employer. Check the current requirements for your circumstances, including any testing or translation requirements.

US licence holders should arrange authentication carefully: the US travel guidance says its embassy in Ghana cannot authenticate state-issued driving licences. Check the process before leaving the US.

See DVLA’s foreign licence conversion service for the official checklist.

4. How to Get an IDP in Ghana

If you hold a Ghanaian licence, apply through Ghana’s DVLA. It lists a valid temporary or actual licence, your physical presence and two recent passport-size photographs among the requirements.

Follow its application, payment and verification process, including any required road-signs test. DVLA says the permit is valid for one year from issue. Check current fees and processing arrangements directly before your trip.

Avoid websites selling an “international driving licence” without checking whether the issuer is authorised. A permit does not extend an expired licence or override a destination’s resident-driver rules.

5. Before You Rent or Borrow a Car

Confirm that the vehicle’s insurance covers you, your licence and your intended driving. Borrowing a relative’s car does not automatically mean you are insured to drive it.

Rental companies can set additional conditions, including minimum age, how long you have held your licence, an IDP and payment-card requirements. Confirm these before paying.

The UK drives on the left. Ghana and the United States drive on the right. Learn the local road signs and rules before driving, especially at junctions and roundabouts.

Before Taking the Keys

Check three things: whether your licence is accepted, whether you need an international permit, and how long you are allowed to drive.

Then confirm your insurance and any rental conditions. Recheck the official guidance before travelling because rules can change.
