Travelling soon and worried about losing internet access when you need directions?
This happened to me recently when I ran out of data in a different country, luckily I was only 10 minutes a walk away from my hotel.
You can download an area in Google Maps before leaving home and use it when your connection is weak or unavailable.
It is a useful preparation step for a road trip or a visit abroad.
Follow the steps below on Android or iPhone.
How to Download Google Maps for Offline Use
- Connect your phone to the internet and open Google Maps. On Android, sign in to your account. On iPhone, make sure Incognito mode is off.
- Tap your profile picture or initial, then select Offline maps.
- Tap Select your own map.
- Move and resize the area to cover the places you plan to visit.
- Tap Download and allow the download to finish before disconnecting.
How Much Phone Storage Do I Need?
Google Maps shows an estimated download size before you save the area. A smaller area generally needs less space. Use that estimate to decide how much to download, as explained in Google’s offline maps guide.
Can I Get Directions Without Mobile Data?
Yes, for driving, provided your entire route is inside the downloaded area. Open Google Maps and use it normally; it can use the saved map when your connection is slow or unavailable.
For a trip between two towns, include the road between them in your download, not just the destination.
What Does Not Work Offline?
- Walking, cycling and public transport directions.
- Live traffic information.
- Alternative driving routes.
Check your journey before setting off, particularly if you will be walking or using public transport.
Do Downloaded Maps Expire?
Yes. Open Offline maps, select an expired or expiring area and tap Update while connected. You can also open the settings within Offline maps and enable Auto-update offline maps.
Before leaving, confirm the download has completed and covers your route. Keep your phone charged and your saved maps up to date.
