Ever forgotten a password just when you needed to open your email? This pick introduces a useful alternative worth understanding.
What is a passkey?
Think of it as a digital key for an account. On supported services, you approve a sign-in with your device’s fingerprint reader, face unlock or screen-lock PIN instead of typing an account password.
For your Google Account, the fingerprint or face data stays on your device. Passkeys also provide stronger protection against phishing—the fake login pages designed to steal passwords.
Try it with your Google Account
Use a device you personally own, with its screen lock enabled.
Select Create a passkey and follow the prompts to unlock your device.
Do not set one up on a shared computer: someone who can unlock that device could access your account. School and work accounts may have different rules. See Google’s official guide for device requirements, recovery and removal instructions.
